..I am assuming, if you're reading this, you also follow the Waygate, Firebase Delta, Fleet Signal, Mann's Model Moments, die Gruene Horde, and maybe even listen to the Jadedgamercast. In particular, you have probably read about the "Great Terrain Debate" SeerK documented last week. If not, go read it here. While I do not agree that there are "three" terrain metas right now, wargamers and tournament organizers alike have a habit for not using enough terrain on their tables. For example, here is a photo from a recent tournament in Europe. I don't think the lack of terrain has anything to do with the local FLGS meta; it has everything to do with terrain availability... specifically, the lack of it. That's why, when I first started playing this game, the first thing I did, before painting a single model, was to create terrain. I was so successful at this, that many who saw it suggested I Kickstart it so I could produce and sell it. Initially, I was just going to give it away, but the strong positive feedback gave me pause.
The problem is, ultimately, I am just not interested in charging for my designs. Even if I charged a very nominal fee, like $0.25 per page, odds are most gamers (who drop hundreds on models they never paint or play with) would rather save 10 bucks, and continue to play on a featureless table. I don't want this growing community to suffer the consequences of their own habit. So I took some time, and rebuilt my terrain templates to fit on standard paper size. These 8"x10" printouts are now available for download, for free, and the resources section. I plan to make more, but this should be sufficient for you to create enough terrain for 25% coverage. One suggestion I recently received was to colorcode the templates by terrain type. This took a few hours, but I made a few test versions, and would appreciate any feedback you might have. Even better, I will be debuting some of my templates at the 1000 point Tournament being held this Sunday, November 8, with sign-ups starting at 10:00, at Games 'n Stuff, in Glen Burnie, Maryland. I have been working with the TO (Bull99) a bit, and he wants to use my terrain to create a Tournament Standard terrain set for the store. For now, I am just working on creating asteroid fields, as one scenario will feature a lot of them. You can download the tournament packet here. Bull99 and I have discussed future events at Games 'n Stuff. We're putting together a Firestorm campaign, featuring Planetfall and Planetary Invasion scenarios. We also have plans for the next two Firestorm Armada events, and I'm really excited about them already. Ultimately, I hope to bring you quality tables at the 2016 NOVA Open. I will be presenting some of my ideas for that soon. Until then, I hope these templates enhance your games. - Ryjak
